How To Deal With Teachers

I am not a big proponent of being manipulative with teachers, but the reality of the academic system is that you do need to deal with them. Tell me your story or ask me a question here by posting a comment and I will help you deal with the worst teacher(s) you have. Please do NOT use their real names -this is not about retaliation. I want to help you deal with the problem – be specific about the issue your having. Make sure you focus on TEACHING and STUDYING ISSUES – not personality conflicts.

I’m here to help you get better grades with less effort!

The 80/20 Rule For Students

The Pareto Principle also called the 80/20 rule is one of the most powerful study techniques I teach in my study book. Simply put, success in school is about knowing WHAT to study and WHEN. In my study book, I combine that with a concept from the 7 Habits Of Highly Effective People that takes away all the guesswork for you. It’s priceless to any student stressed about about exams, lab reports, quizzes and term papers.

Cheap Textbooks – Available Online

If you’re a student and are looking for cheap textbooks, take a look at www.ValoreBooks.com they have thousands of textbooks for every conceivable subject. What you might consider if you want to get better grades, is buy a second textbook for those courses you’re struggling with. By having a different author explaining the SAME subject/topic, he/she might be able to say it in a way that you understand more clearly. I’ve done that on numerous occasions – for those subjects that were particularly hard.

Go ahead and take a look at what’s available – at those prices, you can’t afford NOT to buy it!

Taking Drugs To Study Better

I need to tell you a story about what happened to a fellow classmate back in Engineering School. But first of all, let me declare my bias. I am a coffee virgin, which means I have never consumed a cup of coffee – ever. The reason is that back in my undergraduate days, I saw my classmates drinking 8 to 12 cups/day to stay awake studying for exams… I thought, even then that consuming ANYTHING in that quantity can’t be good…

A Study Mistake To Avoid

That being said, my story takes coffee to a whole new level – caffeine pills. Back in my day, they were called ‘pick me ups’. They were sold over the counter without a prescription. Students took them INSTEAD OF or IN ADDITION to coffee – to stay up and cram for exams. Many students did this.

I did it – ONCE.

I had 3 consecutive days with 5 FINAL EXAMS, each 3 hours, worth 70 to 100% of the course final grade – Canadian Engineering Schools did this to flunk the least capable students ON PURPOSE…

Anyway – it was an ‘impossible’ schedule. So I planned it out. I would get some sleep on DAY ONE, then go straight through the other two days WITHOUT sleep to MAXIMISE every single minute in-between each 3-hour exam to memorise and review everything I could. I would go +/- 36 hours without sleep.

It worked.

Does that mean I am condoning using caffeine or drugs to study?

Not quite – keep reading.

For the next week, I was totally drained… “brain dead”… I had never hit the wall like that ever before. I promised myself “never again”. Thank God it was the END of the SEMESTER.

I was not the only one to suffer these ‘after effects’… But I was one of the few to learn the lesson.

I had a classmate – I forget his name, we’ll call him John. John did not learn the lesson. He scraped by that semester and decided that the following semester he would use the pills for the midterms AND the finals. He got addicted to a false sense of confidence and started taking them at the BEGINNING of the semester.

By the time the midterms came around, he was strung out, exhausted and barely able to focus. He failed every single one of his midterms. By the time the final exams came around, he was on his last legs. He failed those too.

The sad part is John was smart enough to be an Engineer, just not smart enough about HOW TO STUDY WITHOUT CUTTING CORNERS.

John got expelled from Engineering School and his destiny forever altered – because of caffeine pills that he thought would help.

The moral of the story is that there are two ways to try to get ahead faster- take a short cut by learning better study strategies or CUT CORNERS by trying to cheat by taking drugs or otherwise.

I taught myself HOW TO STUDY more effectively rather than spending MORE time – that is how I came about writing my study book. I became so good AT studying that people around me kept asking how I managed to get ‘it all done’ AND have a life outside of school…

I learned the lesson the FIRST TIME – I never took another caffeine pill after that – NEVER NEEDED TO.

If you find yourself in the situation where you need to take pills to stay up late at night studying – I can tell you right now – YOUR STUDY HABITS SUCK.

When I started my Engineering Degree, I was taking 4 or 5 courses per semester. In my last semester, I took a WHOPPING 7 COURSES at the same time – to finish my degree in 3 1/2 years graduating with a DOUBLE MAJOR.

All possible BECAUSE I learned HOW TO STUDY.

Whenever tempted by drugs to stay awake or HIGH CAFFEINE DRINKS – DON’T START. They are addictive drugs that will have consequences… Consequences that could rob you on the very dream you have – the REASON you are considering taking them in the first place.

Don’t do it.

Learn HOW to study instead.

How To Speed Read Twice As Fast As You Do Now

This is a new video that I published on YouTube recently. It’s a summary of How To Speed Read which, as a reader of this blog, you know by now is the #1 most important skill you need to acquire to get the best grades with the least amount of effort. It’s incredibly simple and easy to learn, in fact I have taught thousands of students, many of them grade school kids… Why not you? Have a look at this short YouTube video and then decide you can do it.

MindMap Your Way To Better Grades

Please take a look at this short YouTube video that shows you how to MindMap To Get Better Grades, produced by MindMapping Artist Paul Telling.

This is the teaser for a brand new course that I created with Paul – just for you. If you’re like me, artistically challenged, you read Chapter 6 of my study book and thought to yourself…

“If wish I could draw better…”

Guess what? You can.

This 25-minute MindMapping Program is like a personal tutorial guaranteed to make your note taking absolutely memorable and TOTALLY UNFORGETTABLE so you instantly start to get better grades.

This process does require that you have any artistic skills – just an imagination and a few coloured pens, pencils or markers.

In my study book, I explain that the Reticular Activation System (RAS) in your brain can retain and remember visual cues much easily than written ones, which is why standard note taking simply doesn’t work (as well as you want it to).

MindMapping has been shown to be substantially more effective for students of all ages and within all disciplines of study.

But no one, until now has made it simple and easy to really learn the art and craft of doing this WITHOUT an artistic or graphic skills.

That’s why I am so excited about this. Take a look at the video and you’ll quickly see that it’s not that hard – if you just improved by 10%, your memory recall and retention could skyrocket by 50 to 100% JUST BECAUSE THIS IS SO NEW FOR YOU.

Imagine that!!!!

All you need to do is give it a go and see what happens. As soon as the MindMapping To Get Better Grades Program is released, you’ll be the first to know!

Get Better Grades For FREE

Some students are quite resourceful – they realise that when they get two or three of their friends to buy my study book, it ends up being FREE! Others are a little more industrious and have realised that BECAUSE they’re in school and have access to other students, they can actually create another source of income for themselves!

Some questions people ask about the study book affiliate program include:

Who manages the lists?

The list of buyers is not sent back to affiliates – the logistics of doing this is too cumbersome and complex. You keep your list and we keep ours. We only end up with people who buy our product… We do know that it takes SEVERAL e-mails to get sales and each time a DIFFERENT approach is used, there is a new opportunity to get them to buy. An e-mail about EXAMS is different that one to TAKE NOTES or REDUCE STRESS, or SPEED READ… Each one attracts a different segment.

ClickBank automatically pays you into your account – we don’t handle any of the financial transactions at our end. We just know when a product is bought or a refund requested. Psst! Our refunds are really, really low because these strategies WORK!

Where does the study tip blog fit in?

My study tips blog is a good indirect way for you to get people ‘interested’… it introduces them to the concept and gives them a chance to consider the product.

The best way to promote my study book is to use Exponential Internet Marketing Strategies that I teach – the least expensive way to acquire this knowledge is via the Silver Membership which is $97/month.

We don’t do affiliate training and support since our pages themselves convert well enough that our best affiliates use Google Adwords and Social Networking Strategies to get people to click through to the site.

Getting Better Grades Is About Self Mastery

Today, Nick shares with us some of his challenges that will help you to see that you’re not alone. We all do this to some extent. Self Mastery is about controlling our emotions. My study book is about relieving the pressure and stress of studying so that you don’t put yourself in a pressure cooker.

Read Nick’s e-mail below and my response that follows.

_______________________________________________

Hey Dr. Dussault,

I understand where you’re coming from and I deeply appreciate your concern for me in reaching my full potential.

Ever since I was little, I was the reader who struggled to Excel on standardized tests and to comprehend books. I always felt like I was the slowest reader in the class, as it continues to be a great insecurity of mine.

I also tend to beat myself down when I don’t succeed at say playing sports, improving my reading and grades, etc. But when I look at myself now, I have a 4.0 GPA in high school right now and I’m also a starter on a premier soccer club. Why am I always beating myself up?

This was why I bought your speed reading videos. I was so frustrated with the reading course I was taking at home, that I wanted to try yours. However, like you said, things takes time.

Thanks
Nick

P.S. In regards to your study book, my goal is primarily to become more efficient with my studies, since I procrastinate like you cannot believe. However, I have seen only a slight improvement because I keep going back to my old ways and having trouble following through with your techniques. As you said, It’s not easy, but I am up for the challenge and will continue to strive “onward and upward”.

First of all, Nick is being VERY honest and forthcoming. That is the first thing you have to do to be a great student – well great at anything – it’s to be self-aware. Know yourself so you know what you’re trying to improve.

One of the things Nick MUST stop using is the LABEL of procrastinator. if you see, hear and feel yourself as a procrastinator, you will remain one. Instead, whenever you say that word to yourself, INSTANT correct yourself and say “No, I am an action taker who is taking control of my life and destiny.”

I know it sounds childish – just try it and trust the process.

The next suggestion I have for Nick is to stop beating himself up, but to REWARD his victories and accomplishments.

I recently won a Silver Medal at the 2009 Australian Masters Games in Squash. To celebrate, I posted it on my Personal Mastery Blog, and at a recent event I actually brought my Silver Medal to show my clients who supported me. It was fun, but it also felt good to SHARE the victory with them.

We all need to celebrate the victories.

Holding ourselves to a higher standard does NOT mean you have to beat yourself up or down. Others will do that to you.

You need to keep yourself MOTIVATED and EXCITED.

So, Stop It! <— Click here to watch a funny video.

Mature Student Needs Good Study Habits To Get Better Grades

Today’s post is from Thanh who is challenged with focus and concentration when sitting down to studying – a common problem a lot of students have – bad study habits. First, let’s hear from Thanh…

I am not a young person, I am 53 year old, ambitious, hard working, good character, honest, responsible…I took a course more than two year ( Life Licence Qualification Program) I try, it try but I keep failing. I saw your program online, I ordered, hopefully it could help me to pass the exam. In present time, the job I have seems not secure any more. I wish to have to have the certificate to persue a new career. Would you advise the solution to affect my study? I work from 6am and be home at 6pm after home I prepare my own food, when I sit down to concentrate on the book, I feel like sleeping. But I watching TV or online reading I was awake. Sound like I am lazy, am I? Thank you for your concern.

Dyslexic Students Can Get Better Grades Part Two

Todays post is courtesy of the folks at www.HomeDeclutterAndFun.com, with the original source being Cambridge University, so it comes from a very authoritative source. Dyslexic students can get better grades, as I mentioned in a previous post. Dyslexia is not a excuse to get poor grades – people of ALL levels of intelligence have been diagnosed as dyslexics.

Get Better Grades To Learn Another Language Faster

Ruben, from the Netherlands, has some very interesting questions that might be of interest to you if you’re keen to Get The Best Grades With The Least Amount Of Effort.

Dr Dussault,

I have some questions about your study method. I am a 16-year old Dutch student in High School and I currently have bad grades for Physics, Chemistry and Math (the highest level of it). My mentor said that changing the profile (which means changing those bad-grades subjects into easy subjects which I find interesting, like history, geography and an easier form of Math) would be a good option to consider. However, there is just one study I need to follow, or else, I won’t have enough subjects to pass that year. This subject would be French. The only problem is, I didn’t follow French lessons this year, because it wasn’t in my profile. My questions are: Does your product makes it easier for me to study history, geography and an easier form of Math, which I all have to study in, let’s say, 6 months, while they are courses designed to learn in one year, so it will be twice more difficult. And does your product also makes it easier to study a language like French in 6 months, while I didn’t even follow it for a year? In the 3rd class (the Dutch High School consists of 6 classes) I got an 8 for French (which would be a B in the USA?), but I didn’t learn the new grammar and words they thought in the 4th class.

So is this product a solution for achieving good grades for these subjects, while I haven’t study them for a year?

Ruben.

Ruben, First all let me say you’re on the right track investigating solutions to your study problems. My study system is designed to help you study any subject more effectively. Simply put, there are things you do when you study the subjects you like, enjoy and are ‘good at’. My system helps you discover what those are so that you become better at ALL your subjects. It’s a process that can happen very quickly, within days and weeks if you are disciplined and stick to the system.

Your question about languages is interesting – language education is different from ‘regular subjects’ because it requires an element of ‘performance’ when speaking as well as a sense of creativity when constructing sentences, paragraphs and longer communications.

My study system will help you study languages better, acquire MORE vocabulary and remember more grammatical rules. To capture a language more quickly, I would suggest two ideas: First, get Rapid Reader and speed read as much in the language you are trying to learn to get the words and sentence structure into your sub-conscious.

An example in French is below… At 600 words per minute, it may be too fast, but you can slow down the program to a speed that suits you. The reason this is a great learning tool is it FORCES you to absorb the words as fast as possible, faster than you can verbally say them so it becomes ’second nature’ and automatic for you.

It’s not expensive and can dramatically improve BOTH your vocabulary and grammar.

Learn a foreign language faster with speed reading!

Several students who used my study system accelerated their studies by taking more intense courses or taking more courses to finish their degrees sooner as I have done. That being said, I do not endorse or suggest you do that without parental advice.

Taking intensive courses is a decision that needs to be made based on your academic, intellectual and disciplinary skills. Not everyone can ‘accelerate’ their study by taking on MORE courses. Only experienced students with outstanding study techniques can do that.

I would suggest that you first buy my study book, use the strategies to see how it helps you. If you are disciplined enough and apply them properly, then and only then, should you consult your parents and mentor to determine if you can fast-track your language studies.

The bottom line is that my study system works BECAUSE it is designed to work for you, based on how YOU study and learn best. Give it try, it’s backed up with an 8-week money-back guarantee that means there is no risk at all. If the strategies don’t work for you, just ask for a refund.

Don’t forget you also get the Speed Learning Video as a bonus when you buy the e-book!

Dyslexic Students Can Get Better Grades

I was recently asked if my Get The Best Grades With The Least Amount Of Effort can help dyslexic students and the answer is a resounding yes! The reason is that my study techniques help YOU discover and reveal HOW you learn best and gives you a framework to do it over and over again – effortlessly.

Also, you can use Rapid Reader to speed read your WORD and PDF documents at lightning fast speed – ESPECIALLY if your dyslexic. Give the video a go below and see what happens… Imagine how easier it will be for you to read this way!

Some dyslexic students have found that ONCE they’ve used Rapid Reader for a while, their dyslexia ’subsides’ which makes no sense, but they don’t care!!!

So there you have it – another reason to buy my Get The Best Grades With Least Amount Of Effort Book!

How To Build Study Endurance and Stamina

If you are going back to school, are in school or are studying for your certification in any vocational trade, you will need to know how to study.  The fact is that almost everyone hates studying!

Learning how to study isn’t something most of us think about.  The good news is that you can learn how to study effectively, if you follow the proven systems, tips and tools found in my ebook Get The Best Grades With the Least Amount of Effort.

Just like working out at the gym.  You can train your brain and build your study endurance and stamina over time.

Some key study tips to get your started:

1. Get to know your schedule - start blocking out time to study.  This will help your brain and body get into the habit of studying on a regular basis.

2. Only study when you are rested. It doesn’t do you any good to try to commit things to memory when you are exhausted.  You are wasting your time, and the information will just slip away.

3. Study where there are no distractions – libraries and quiet rooms are great, recreation areas are not.

4. Take notes in class – this helps you remember, but also points out important points when you are reviewing.

Try this study strategy – it’s a proven study tip learnt from my years of experience.

Survey means to scope out and know what type of exam you are studying for. Asking questions helps you to understand what the answers are. When reading, be active, include graphs and charts.  Stop periodically to go over relationships and recite key answers in your head – literally say them in your head.  Reviewing simply means to re-read some of the things you’ve covered to make sure you still have a good understanding of the material.

Better learning habits will only make your life easier in the long run!

Additional resources for students who want to accelerate their learning can also be found on the Get Better Grades website.

Building endurance and stamina to sustain your newfound study skills is covered in more detail in Chapter 9 of my ebook Get Best Grades with the Least Amount of Effort. Get it now to start saving time studying and improve your grades THIS WEEK.

Make sure you also consider my Speed Learning Video and Speed Reading Video products – to truely bolster your study efficiency.

Manage Your Study Workload

Are you one of those who always places more importance on recreation rather than studying? Do you tend to put your studies off until tomorrow? If you are, who could blame you, because nobody in their right mind would want to stay in studying, rather than having a fun night out on the town with their mates.

But if you learn how to study for a test, how to study for an exam or just how to study better – it can make the study experience all the more enjoyable.

As humans, we all prefer the fun things in life rather than the monotonous chores we’re always faced with. The only problem though, is that putting things off until the next day will nearly always result in MORE STRESS!

Writing down and maintaining a priority study list and working through it accordingly is a far better solution. A list not only helps to ensure you don’t forget anything, it also allows you to work through tasks in a logical order. The benefit of following this method is that for the most part, you’ll actually end up having more free time to enjoy yourself!

While many people tend to think that they should complete all the small tasks first, before tackling the big important ones, in reality it works the other way around. Providing you tackle all the worst jobs first, the small jobs will be a breeze and before you know it, you’ll have quality free time on your hands.

Likewise, if you have a specific task which you know will take longer than average, make a commitment to tackle it at a certain time and make sure you’ve set aside enough time to do it.

The benefits of making a study list and actually sticking to it are many, especially nowadays when so many people have to make time for their studies in between doing other life chores. The solution to managing your time is all about working smarter, rather than working harder.

Other study skill activities, study skill tips and study skill techniques are outlined in the Get The Best Grades with the Least Amount of Effort ebook available for order online.

Admittedly, what works for you may not work for someone else. I explain why this is and what to do about it in Chapter 5 of my ebook Get The Best Grades With the Least Amount of Effort.

The truth is though, the list method ALWAYS WORKS, providing you make any necessary adjustments in order to best meet your own requirements. With a little bit of experimenting, you’ll soon discover the formula that suits you best.

Tips like this and other study shortcuts are covered in more depth in chapter 7 of my ebook Get The Best Grades With the Least Amount of Effort.

How To Manage Projects and Study

Today’s post is from Natasha, she is struggling to complete a project and study at the same time.

First things first.

You need to buy my book Get The Best Grades With The Least Amount Of Effort to learn the strategies that will help you overcome study stress and overwhelm. Here is Natasha’s situation:

______________________________________________

Greetings,Thank you for you information. I am struggling here to finish an ICT project which is due on March 27th. These days I sleep at 12.00 midnight to do the project and wake up at 3.00 am to study ICT till 6.00. I continue then go to school. I have also found that my efficiency and productivity is also less at night, but I can’t help it! At least I do less than doing nothing at all!

But at school I really find it difficult to concentrate as I feel sleepy. My teacher also scolds me…but I still want to finish the project as I started it really late and others are well ahead of me. I am really worried and lost confidence. I have paid a lot of money to sit for this exam. Would you please give me some tips to finish my project as soon as possible so that I have time to study! I went through the section where you said “Important and emergency” please elaborate more on this topic as I’ve got it important and urgent as well.

Natasha, First of all, you’ve painted yourself into a corner. That is one of the things I teach students to AVOID. Once you have painted yourself into the corner, you need to get out of it as quickly as you can.

How to get out of study stress and overwhelm

  1. Pick up my study book and determine which learning style you are. Without learning this, you are wasting too many hours study ineffectively. You need to STUDY LESS and REMEMBER MORE – you can’t do that UNLESS you know YOUR learning style. My study book explains how simple and easy this is.
  2. Once you know your learning style, you will UNDERSTAND FASTER AND REMEMBER MORE. That will give you EXTRA TIME – to sleep or catch up on other stuff.
  3. You decision to SLEEP or work on other projects is a priority management issue that I explain with a simple diagram so you can start to do the right things at the right time to reduce study stress, anxiety and overwhelm.
  4. Once you’ve done that, you will know exactly how to stay out of the URGENT and IMPORTANT quadrant. If you don’t buy my book and apply the study strategies, you’re on your own. The study tips and tools in my book are EASY to LEARN and apply. The book is inexpensive compared to the cost of NOT getting any sleep and getting poor grades and getting stressed out.

You need to start by buying my book, then applying the study strategies and then asking me SPECIFIC QUESTIONS about the strategies so I can help you get better grades with the least amount of effort!

It’s all about applying my 1 percent improvement doctrine!

Of course if you’re not speed reading, you are wasting HOURS AND HOURS reading slower than you should.

I have a Speed Reading Video Program that guarantees you will double your reading speed in less than 2 hours. That means you’ll have all that time to do projects or study. if you don’t learn to speed read, you are WASTING valuable time – time that you are not sleeping or doing something else.
